Alaska by Automobile - 14 Days

Web Version

After an overnight rest in Anchorage, head north to the Matanuska Valley. Visit Hatchers Pass with its historic gold mine (now a museum), before driving north to the high tundra of Tangle Lakes and spend a couple of days hiking the hills, kayaking the 25-mile long Tangle Lake, and exploring this archeologically rich area.

Continue on to Glenallen before arriving for a two-night cabin stay in the ghost town of Chitina. As an optional excursion, you can park your car and board a small plane for the trip to McCarthy/Kennicott in the Wrangell-St. Elias mountains.

Head south to the Kenai Peninsula and the fishing port of Seward. While in Seward, take a glacier cruise in the Gulf of Alaska and walk to the face of one of the Kenai Peninsula's most popular attractions, Exit Glacier. Continuing south down the peninsula, visit a Russian Orthodox Church before arriving in the quaint fishing port of Homer. Optional Halibut charters and bear viewing tours are available.

Wrap this vacation up with a free evening in Anchorage for shopping or just relaxing before either heading home or continuing on another tour.
